Do a search for “CEO Morning Routine” and you’ll find a ton of articles,  almost all including some kind of exercise. Inc.com gives examples of how 8 entrepreneurs work out each morning. Entrepreneur.com talks about why entrepreneurs should exercise. I started by looking at CEOs because, by many people’s measure, there is some degree of success in the title alone. But this isn’t just for CEOs and entrepreneurs, and I believe this type of morning wake up workout may be a part of why these individuals became successful to begin with.

It isn’t just small company leaders either – one Wall Street Journal interview (and many others) talks about how Dan Schulman, CEO of PayPal, makes sure to start every day by practicing krav maga, an Israeli martial art. Ridiculously successful and prolific author Brandon Sanderson mentions his morning workouts regularly in his podcast.

As you inspect the lives of successful people in general, a disproportionate number of them start their day with a morning workout. I’m not claiming it is a rocket ship to success, but I believe part of it relates to the idea of “Make your bed”. As the admiral says (I’m paraphrasing), you’ll learn to do something right and well, and no matter what happens, you’ve accomplished something almost immediately each morning.

Do it (whatever it is) early and it is more likely to get done. Then, for working out at least, you can ride the good feelings, accomplishment, hormonal balance, and endorphin rush into the rest of the day. You’ll see increasing benefits over time as you get more fit, feel better, and can do more with better energy. You’ll find that if you start each morning with some kind of exercise it will become easier and easier to squeeze in. There’s a form of inertia in this consistency that carries you to better health.

That same inertia, on a day-to-day basis, can help your everyday productivity. You just woke up, time for a HIIT (high-intensity interval training) workout! Once that is done you’ve already gotten over the inertia of lying in bed. Your body is no longer at rest, it is in motion and ready for the day.

Get in some morning movement, and train your way to success in all areas of your life.
